Ranchi Station of ICAR-NBPGR organized an invited talk on “Application of irradiation in agriculture”

An invited talk was by Dr. Archana N. Rai, Scientific Officer “E” Nuclear agriculture and Biotechnology Division, Bhabha Atomic Research Center, Mumbai on the topic “Application of irradiation in agriculture” was organized by the ICAR-NBPGR, Regional Station, Ranchi on February 9, 2018. The talk was attended by the scientists and students of the ICAR-NBPGR, Regional Station, Ranchi, ICAR Research Complex for Eastern Region, Research Center, Ranchi and ICAR-Indian Institute of Biotechnology, Ranchi. Dr. Rai was welcomed by Dr. S.K. Bishnoi, Scientist and Officer Incharge, ICAR-NBPGR, Regional Station, Ranchi. Her presentation centered on the generation of genetic stocks with specific traits of agronomic importance in different crops including cereals, pulses, vegetables etc using mutagenesis through irradiation and chemical agents. She elaborated various steps involved in the mutation breeding programme and how it can complement the traditional breeding programmes where limited natural variability exists in the plant genetic resources of particular crops. Dr. Rai apprised the audience about the procedure of funding for various research projects under the Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences (BRNS). The talk concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. S.B.
