Visit of Farmers’ of Mewat region to NBPGR and Krishi Unnati Mela under Mer Gaon Mera Gaurav

On 16.3.2018, sixteen farmers from identified villages of Mewat region under MGMG programme visited NBPGR and Kirshi Unnati Mela at IARI, New Delhi. Before proceeding for Mela ground, the farmers were welcomed by Dr. SP Ahlawat, Head, Plant Exploration and gave brief account about the activities of Krishi Unnati Mela and its advantages to the farmers. Dr. Kuldeep Singh, Director, NBPGR briefed them about the plant genetic resources and their role in agriculture. Dr. Ashok Kumar, head, Germplasm Evaluation Division has also addressed about the value of germplasm/local crop landraces, need for their conservation and their role in crop improvement. The farmers also expressed their views and asked about the solution for diseases and pests in mustard; new varieties developed in rice suitable for their area. The farmers informed that the production of bottle gourd has gone down now. Dr. Kuldeep Singh suggested them to grow Sahajan (Moringa oliefera) in their area which is a rich source of iron. The seedlings will be provided by NBPGR; also, the germplasm of bottle gourd collected from Mewat region should be multiplied and supplied to the farmers. One of the farmers has also brought cabbage grown under organic condition. The farmers also visited National Genebank. Dr. Anuradha Agarwal has shown them LTS and cryopreservation facilities and briefed about the importance and role Gene bank in preservation of farmer’s varieties. In the last, Dr. K C Bhatt presented vote of thanks. After visit of NBPGR, the farmers were taken to Mela Ground to visit Krishi Unnati Mela.
