One day PGR awareness camp on promotion and conservation of traditional crops was organized on 20th November 2018 at Kalpa in Kinnaur District of Himachal Pradesh in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Sharbo Kinnaur. A total of 235 tribal farmers belong to Kalpa, Yuwarangi, and Sudharang have attended this awareness camp. The prime aim of this programme was to bring awareness among tribal farming community on the benefits of plant genetic resources including crop landraces which are being maintained by them and facilitating registration of Farmers’ Varieties. The Pradhan Gram Panchayat Kalpa Sh. Praveen Negi and Sudharang panchayat Smt. Veena Kumari was also present in this awareness camp. Dr Shashi Sharma, Programme Co-ordinator of KVK welcomed dignitaries and participants. Dr Mohar Singh, Principal Scientist of NBPGR Shimla mentioned about the significance of traditional crops under changing climate scenario and registration of farmer varieties with PPVFRA and set the stage for audience. Dr Kallool Pramanik Head Indian Agricultural Research Institute Regional Station Shimla emphasized the role of traditional wild fruits for nutritional security under changing climate. Dr Rajeev Kumar, Subject Matter Specialist (SMS) of KVK Sharbo Kinnaur highlighted the role of traditional vegetables in Kalpa region for enhancing farmer’s income. In this awareness programme, farmer kit containing Bavistin packet, Sickle and literature was also distributed to each participant. At the end, interactive session was arranged and all questions raised by farmer were replied upto their satisfaction. The programme was ended with the vote of thanks followed by lunch arranged to all participants.
