ICAR-National Bureau of Plants Genetic Resources, Regional Station Ranchi organized the “Horsegram (Macrotyloma uniflorum L.) Germplasm Field Day” on 10th December, 2019. The field day was attended by thirty participants representing three state Agricultural Universities namely Birsa Agricultural University, Ranchi; Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Raipur, Bidhan Chandra Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Kalyani and four ICAR institutes viz. ICAR-Indian Institute of Pulse Research, ICAR-Indian Institute of Natural Resins and Gums, ICAR-Research Complex for Eastern Region, ICAR-Indian Institute of Agricultural Biotechnology.The programme initiated with welcome address by Dr. Shashi Bhushan Choudhary, Scientist & Officer-in-Charge, ICAR-NBPGR Ranchi. Subsequently, Dr. Ashok Kumar, Principal Scientist & Head, Division of Germplasm Evaluation emphasized the importance of germplasm and field days particularly of orphan crop like Horsegram and encouraged breeders to effectively utilize the resource. Dr. Z. A. Haider, Associate Dean, College of Horticulture, Birsa Agricultural University, Ranchi highlighted research priorities in the crop and emphasized inclusion of diverse accessions in the breeding programme. Dr. D. N. Singh, Director Research, Birsa Agricultural University, Ranchi graced the occasion as chief guest and shared his experience with the crop and revealed its prospects in Jharkhand. All the participants visited the field where 3127 genebank accessions of Horsegram were grown for characterization and preliminary evaluation under DBT funded project on Genetic Enhancement on Minor Pulses. The participants examined the material critically and selected germplasm of their choice as per their breeding objectives. During interaction, the participants appreciated the efforts of ICAR-NBPGR in showcasing the diversity at appropriate stage. Participants particularly amazed with diversity of plant type, maturity period and pod bearing habits in the population. The programme concluded with vote of thanks proposed by Mrs. Reshmi Raj K. R., Scientist of the regional station.
