One day PGR awareness camp on promotion and conservation of traditional crops was organized on 29th October 2020 at village Chitkul (Last village of India) in Kinnaur District of Himachal Pradesh in collaboration with YSPUHF Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Sharbo Kinnaur. A total of 125 tribal farmers attended this awareness camp. The prime aim of this programme was to bring awareness among tribal farming community on the benefits of plant genetic resources including crop landraces which are being maintained by them. Dr Mohar Singh, Principal Scientist & Officer-in-Charge of ICAR-NBPGR Shimla mentioned about the significance of traditional crops under changing climate scenario and registration of farmer varieties with PPVFRA. Dr Kallool Pramanik, Principal Scientist & Head ICAR-IARI Regional Station Shimla & Dr Arun Kumar, Scientist of KVK Sharbo Kinnaur emphasized the cultivation of fruits especially apple in chitkul and adjoining area. Emerging questions were raised by the farmers related to apple cultivation and these were replied to their satisfaction by the expert scientist. The Pradhan Gram Panchayat Chtikul Smt. Rajkumari also present in this awareness camp. In this awareness programme, a small exhibition was also showcased in which seed material and fruits of different crops were displayed. A farmer kit containing secateur and literature was distributed to participants. The programme was ended with the vote of thanks followed by lunch arranged to all participants.
