Virtual Training Course on Management of Fruit Genetic Resources (February 1-2, 202)

A virtual training course on ‘Management of Fruit Genetic Resources’ was organized by ICAR-NBPGR, New Delhi, in collaboration with ICAR-All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Fruits, Bengaluru and ICAR-Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, Bengaluru, on February 1-2, 2021.

The training was attended by a total of 72 participants, out of which 69 were scientists/faculty across the country working in the ICAR-AICRP on Fruits, and three scientists from ICAR-NBPGR. The training was designed to cover all the aspects of fruit genetic resources management and included 13 lectures delivered by resource persons from ICAR-NBPGR, New Delhi and its Regional Stations. Trainees were apprised of the different aspects of fruit germplasm exploration, collection, conservation and evaluation, along with detailed demonstration of the procedures of germplasm registration and PGR informatics. The importance of the national plant quarantine system, germplasm exchange policies and international treaties regulating germplasm exchange were discussed and elaborated. The trainees were also acquainted with the concepts of core collections and possibilities of genomics based characterization of fruit crop germplasm were discussed, along with importance of DNA fingerprinting before varietal release.

Dr A.K. Singh (DDG, Horticultural Science) was the Chief Guest of the valedictory session, and Guests of Honour included Dr B.K. Pandey (ADG, HS), Dr M.R. Dinesh (Director, ICAR-IIHR) and Dr Kuldeep Singh (Director, ICAR-NBPGR & Course Director). The training was well-appreciated by the participants and the dignitaries. They lauded the planning carried out by Course Coordinator Dr Prakash Patil, Project Coordinator (Fruits), ICAR-AICRP on Fruits, ICAR-IIHR and Course Convenor Dr Anuradha Agrawal, Principal Scientist, ICAR-NBPGR. Efforts made by Course Co-convenors namely Drs Vartika Srivastava, Era Vaidya Malhotra, K.S. Hooda (ICAR-NBPGR) and Sridhar Gutam (ICAR-IIHR) for smooth conduct of training were also acknowledged by all. The training ended on a high note, and participants requested for more trainings on PGR related aspects be held in future.
