“Plant Genetic Resources/Farmer Rights Awareness Camp” organized by ICAR-NBPGR Regional Station Srinagar under TSP at Lam Tral, District Pulwama (Jammu & Kashmir) on 30th March, 2021

One day “Plant Genetic Resources/Farmer Rights Awareness Camp” was organized by ICAR-NBPGR Regional Station Srinagar at remote, tough and hilly Lam village (upper Lam) of Tral, District Pulwama (Jammu & Kashmir) on 30th March, 2021. 150 local tribal Gujjar farmers including 55 women attended the camp. Numberdar (Village Head) of Upper Lam (Devdarpora) and some elderly noble villagers were present on the occasion. During the camp scientists of the station and from KVK Malanpur Pulwama and ICAR-IGFRI Regional Station Srinagar interacted with the farmers about importance and values of local plant genetic resources like potato, local maize, pulses especially rajmash, etc. and need for their promotion in the farmer fields. Since the local population has a close connect with the forest, the importance of wild economically important biodiversity was also conveyed during the camp. Relevance of these genetic resources to the livelihood and nutritional security of tribal people was explained by the scientists. Some locals also spoke on the occasion and mentioned interesting use of biodiversity in their everyday life. 150 seed packets of Rajmash landrace and 150 kits of small agricultural implements were distributed among the farmers on the occasion. Refreshment was provided to the farmers during the event. The awareness programme was widely hailed by entire population in the area and highlighted in social media.
