Two awareness programmes were organized to create awareness among tribal peoples by organizing awareness programmes to facilitate the registration of Farmers’ Varieties with PPV&FR Authority and to undertake capacity development programme on PGR awareness among tribal farmers including conservation of local diversity of traditional crops using Community Seed Banking. by ICAR-NBPGR, Regional Station, Shimla in collaboration with KVK, Chamba, Kinnaur & CSKHPKV, Palampur one at Pakhani in District Chamba on 11.03.2016 and other at Sangla, District Kinnuar of Himachal Pradesh on 19.03.2016. Around 475 participants including progressive farmers attended this programme (250 in Chamba & 225 in Sangla). Both the programme was started with a formal welcome of dignitaries and the tribal peoples including farmers by Dr Mohar Singh and further by elaborating on the topic role of PGR management and community seed banking for the safe conservation of local diversity and registration of local land races, Variety Protection and seed laws of India, procedure for registration of plant varieties with special reference to farmer varieties, farmer’s rights and strategy/plan of action for registration of farmers varieties and community recognition awards.  

In Pakhani Chamba, Sh. Beli Ram Kapoor, The Ex-Chairman, Block Development Committee cum Panchayat President Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) was chief guest and in Sangla Kinnuar, Dr Sanjeev Chandel, Project Officer, District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) Kinnaur Himachal Pradesh was chief guest. Emerging questions were raised by the farmers and these were replied to their satisfaction by the expert scientists in both programmes. All the participants were provided tea and the snacks and lunch after the programme got concluded. 475 sets containing seed material, pesticides and literature was also distributed to each participant.  The programme was also covered by regional media.
