Salient Achievements:
  • Establishment of the National Cryogenebank  at NBPGR, New Delhi and to undertake basic studies on desiccation and freezing sensitivity for use as a parameter for categorization of seed storage behaviour
  • Development of cryopreservation protocols for diverse plant germplasm using explants like seeds, embryos, embryonic axes and also for dormant buds and pollen.
  • Guidelines developed for collection and transportation of fruits and seeds, especially for recalcitrant and intermediate seed species.
  • Methods developed for laboratory handling of perishable materials in order to retain their viability during processing for storage.
  • Use of new vitrification based protocols for cryobanking of non-orthodox seed species.
  • Initiation of intensive cryobanking of pollen of highly recalcitrant seed species.
  • Base collection of dormant buds of deciduous species like mulberry, almond and walnut.
  • Multidisciplinary approaches using morphological, physiological and molecular markers for aiding in cryobanking.
