Establishment of National Genomic
Resource Repository and
On-Line Management:

Much of the success achieved to date in crop breeding aimed at improvement of
crop productivity can be traced to ready access to the diversity &
it’s exploitation maintained
in gene banks. During the last decade huge volumes of genomic data has been
generated resulting from various studies related to isolation of individual
candidate genes, dissection of genetic architecture (using QTLs and comparative
studies) based on structure and evolutionary relationships among genomes. Of
late, popularization of Marker Assisted Breeding has contributed to increase
in demand from crop researcher for genomic material. For example, users querying
genomic databases will want to order material with the interesting sequences in
a purified line. Other users will ask the gene bank for accessions with all
variation known to exist for a certain gene. Anticipating these demands a
National Genomic Resource Repository is established in the year 2010 to collect,
generate, conserve and distribute genomic resources of important crops in the
Division of Genomic Resources, ICAR - National Bureau of Plant Genetic
Resources, New Delhi. This repository provides long term conservation and
management (includes both physical and on-line database) of available genomic
resources. The inter-active genomic repository database is supported by
bioinformatics capacity and infrastructure facilitating users to check
composition of genomic resources available, make submissions, updates and
retrieve.
