One day training program at Tynring Village EKH Meghalaya held on 18th October, 2022

ICAR-National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources Regional Station Umiam in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), East Khasi Hills organised a One Day Training Programme on “Awareness camp on Plant Genetic Resources Utilization and Conservation” at Tynring Village, East Khasi Hills on 18th October, 2022. The program was attended by 100 farmers. Ms. Badahunlang Wahlang, Senior Scientist & Head, KVK, East Khasi Hills welcomed the dignitaries and the local farmers gathered during the occasion. Dr. Subarna Hajong, Scientist, ICAR NBPGR RS Shillong outlined the objectives of the training program and briefed the gathering about the mandate and activities of ICAR-NBPGR. She highlighted the importance of conservation of local and indigenous crops. Earlier, Shri W. Nongrum, Headman of the Tynring Village thanked the organisers for conducting such a program for the benefit of farmers. The Chief Guest, Shri D. Lamar, Joint Director of Horticulture (Planning), Department of Agriculture and Farmer’s Welfare, Government of Meghalaya emphasized the need for conservation of plant genetic resources especially the traditional varieties. He also implored the farmers to set up local seed/gene banks to meet their local requirements of seeds. Dr. Chubasenla Aochen, Sr. Scientist, ICAR RC for NEH Region spoke about the nutritional diversity of indigenous plant genetic resources in NE India and their importance and utilization. Dr. Ruth Assumi Scientist, ICAR RC for NEH Region informed the gathering about the importance of processing and different methods of value additions of various horticultrural crops. During the training program, agricultural tools viz. spade, sickle, secateur, watering can and other items like carry bag, cap, notepad, ball pen and seedlings of Dillenia indica, an important medicinal plant was distributed to 100 farmers. The meeting concluded with vote of thanks by Mr. Given Thangkhiew (ICAR-NBPGR RS Shillong, Umiam).
