"The International Women’s Day was joyously observed at the ICAR-NBPGR in New Delhi, embracing the global theme "Invest in Women - Accelerate Progress" on March 8, 2024. The event was organized by the "Women Welfare Committee", chaired by Dr. Celia Chalam Vasimalla, under the auspices of the Bureau. Ms. Smita Singh, I.R.S., Additional Commissioner of Income Tax, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Ms. Neha Agarwal, SAO, ICAR-NBPGR, introduced the distinguished speaker to the audience. In her address, the Chief Guest highlighted the remarkable achievements of women across generations, shedding light on the persistent challenges they face and the pathways forward. Ms. Singh emphasized the significant strides made by women in various spheres over the years, encompassing equality within families, educational pursuits, sports, science, politics, and bureaucracy. She highlighted that while the representation of female students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Management (STEM) stands at an impressive percentage in our country but only a marginal proportion ascend to service-level positions. However, she appreciated the signification proportion of female strength in work force at ICAR-NBPGR. Furthermore, Ms. Singh acknowledged the revolutionary efforts of women breaking barriers in diverse fields, including space science, research, mountaineering, and more. Her insightful address aimed to inspire and motivate, encouraging continued support and investment in women to propel progress at national level. Dr. Gyanendra Pratap Singh, Director of the institute, apprised the Chief Guest about the Bureau's achievements and the significant contribution of its female staff to its progress over the years. He also highlighted the imperative need to change mindsets at the family level to break stereotypes and bring about remarkable societal change. Dr. Kavita Gupta, OIC, PME Cell, and Dr. Lalit Arya, Principal Scientist, also addressed the gathering. Dr. Sherry R Jacob convened the program, which concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Sangita Bansal.
